What is DOTS Disability?
DOTS Disability (DOTS) is a Community Interest Company controlled by 14 disabled Consultants. Between them the Consultants have personal experience of a range of different disabilities including physical impairments, sensory impairments, mental health support needs, learning disabilities and HIV/AIDS. DOTS is coordinated by Jonathan Waddington-Jones, an Occupational Therapist.
DOTS works to promote a more inclusive society. We provide professional Training and Consultancy Services. DOTS Consultants meet regularly as a group and can be accessed by any organisation.
At DOTS we actively engage with a wider network of local disabled people which ensures that our recommendations and guidance are informed by their knowledge and experience. This approach enables us to give our clients solutions that really make a difference.
Who do we work with?
DOTS work with every kind of organisation, and individuals, on all issues related to disability and the Disability Discrimmination Acts (1995 & 2005). We work with businesses, shops, developers, Local Authorities, Residential and Nursing Homes, Schools and Housing Associations. We have extensive experience of the needs of people with a range of disabilities and impairments in various settings.
Our Approach
We take a practical, outcome-focused approach to disability access and inclusion which focuses on removing the barriers that disadvantage disabled people. This approach, called the Social Model of Disability, sits in opposition to the view that disabled people themselves are the problem (often referred to as the Medical Model).
How does DOTS benefit disabled people?
As well as improving access through its activities, DOTS involves disabled people in those very activities. DOTS trains and supports disabled people themselves to develop skills as Access Auditors, Consultants and Disability Equality Trainers.
DOTS Disability is a Community Interest Company (CIC). A CIC is a new type of company designed for social enterprises that want to use their profits for the public good. By providing organisations with professional Disability Equality Services DOTS aims to provide services that support disabled people to access employment, education and leisure.
DOTS welcomes new disabled Members. If you would like to be involved with DOTS, or simply want to receive our Newsletter, please contact us anytime.
