Being Disability Aware Makes Good Business Sense
Increasingly businesses are physically altering their premises to make them accessible to disabled people, and are also changing employment policies and practices, for example in recruitment and retention. It makes good business sense for business to be disability aware. Not only is it against the law to discriminate against disabled people, but very often disabled people are good, loyal customers and good employees. 20% of the population have a disability or impairement. Disabled people in the UK spend over £40 billion a year on goods and services.
An Inexpensive Adjustment Can Make A Big Difference
Most businesses want to be disability aware and welcoming towards disabled people. Often the changes businesses need to make are surprisingly inexpensive but make a great deal of difference to disabled people.
Get the Right Advice
To identify any necessary changes it pays to have professional input. A ramp to allow wheelchair access might seem a good idea, but there is little point if the ramp is so steep that none can use it! The DDA is not only about access for wheelchair-users (who are 5% of disabled people). The Act concerns all disabilities, including visual and hearing impairments, mental health, and longterm conditions such as HIV/AIDS, Cancer and MS. What is a reasonable adjustment for you to make will depends on a number of variables, for example your size and your customer base. We can offer advice that is reasonable and will help you make the changes that make the most difference - many of which cost nothing at all.
