What is DOTS Disability?
DOTS Disability is a Community Interest Company led by a Management Committee of 14 disabled people and carers. We have a wider Membership of over 100 disabled people and carers and always welcome new Members. Our Membership and our Management Committe relect the diversity of disabled. people. We welcome all disabled people and carers whatever their impairment type, age, gender, sexual orientation or ethnicity.
DOTS Disability works to promote a more inclusive society. We provide professional Disability Equality, Training and Consultancy Services to organisations that want to provide more inclusive services.
At DOTS Disability we actively engage with a wider network of local disabled people which ensures that our recommendations and guidance are informed by their knowledge and experience. This approach enables us to give our clients solutions that really make a difference.
Who do we work with?
DOTS Disability works with many different types of organisations. We currently work closely with Bournemouth Borough Council, Synergy Housing Group, Castlepoint Shopping Park, Healthy Living Project and SAAFA, for example.
Our Approach
We take a practical, outcome-focused approach to disability access and inclusion which focuses on removing the barriers that disadvantage disabled people. This approach, based on the Social Model of Disability, sits in opposition to the view that disabled people themselves are the problem (often referred to as the Medical Model).
How does DOTS benefit disabled people?
DOTS Disability trains and supports disabled people to develop the necessary skills to run our information service, called 'Directions'. At 'Directions' disabled people can get advice from other disabled people to help them access leisure, education and work opportunities. We also offer training to members of DOTS Disability to take part in Mystery Shopper Audits, Access Audits, Consultantancy Groups and Disability Equality Training. We have a strong volunteer development program.
DOTS Disability is a Community Interest Company (CIC). A CIC is a new type of company designed for social enterprises that want to use their profits in the communities interest. Any profit DOTS Disability makes is used to promote equality.
